Credit Card Market Share

The credit card market share in the US is probably one of the biggest and most coveted.
 

   
A total of 576.4 million credit cards are in circulation in the United States and this is shared by four major credit card companies: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover. Visa still holds the biggest credit card market share in the US with 270.1 million cards in circulation. MasterCard follows with 203 million credit cards. American express ranks third with 48.9 million. Discover, on the other hand, has 54.4 million cards in circulation. Although the credit card market share of Visa has decreased by 11% in 2009, it still holds the biggest number. Other credit card payment companies also showed a decrease in their credit card market share. MasterCard is down 22%, American Express has decreased 9%, and Discover lost 6% of its credit card market share.

This is not a big change from the credit card market share in 2008 in which Visa still holds the majority with 47.23% of the market. As always, MasterCard follows with 35.33% credit card market share. American Express is far behind with only 11.14% and Discover comes last holding 6.3% of the credit card market share.

In terms of global credit card market share (by purchase transactions), Visa still leads the way issuing 64.79% of the world’s credit cards. MasterCard ranks second holding 26.5% of the credit card market share. American Express lags behind with 4.57%. China UnionPay, JCB, and Diners Club follow suit with 3.29%, 0.73%, and 0.14% of the credit card market share respectively. This is according to the Nilson Report as of April 2010.

In terms of issuing credit cards, the market share is distributed to a number of financial service companies including banks. According to the Nilson Report as of February 2009, Chase still holds the crown with the biggest credit card market share of 21.22%. This amounts to more or less 119.4 million credit cards in use. Citibank follows with 92 million credit cards issued. Bank of America ranks third with 80.2 million credit cards. Discover comes next with 48 million credit cards in circulation. American Express is not far behind with 46.5 million credit cards. The sixth spot goes to Capital One with 46.3 million credit cards followed by HSBC with 38.8 million cards. Number eight is G.E. Money holding a credit card market share of 27.2 million. Target and Wells Fargo round up the top ten list with 23.4 million and 17.3 million credit cards respectively.
