One of the most popular credit cards from Citibank is the Citi® mtvUTM Platinum Select® Visa® Card, which is simply
known as the MTVU credit card.
Available for college students, it is a rewards card that allows the cardholder to earn points for purchases made
on the card. The MTVU credit card is issued by Citibank in cooperation with MTV.
The most attractive feature of the MTVU credit card is the Thank You Rewards Program. This program allows the
cardholder to earn points for doing things that every college student does: buy books, go to movies, dine, pay
bills on time, and get good grades. Up to 2000 points are given to cardholders who have a good GPA and 25 points to
those who do not exceed their credit limits and pay their bills on time. Five points are also given for every
dollar spent at bookstores, restaurants, fast food chains, movie theatres, etc and 1 point for every dollar spent
on other purchases. Once accumulated, these points can be redeemed for rewards such as gift cards, electronic
items, merchandise, airline tickets, and even tickets to the MTV Video Music Awards or MTVU’s Spring Break.
Staple features of the MTVU credit card include travel & emergency assistance, travel accident insurance, and
auto rental insurance. It also includes an extended warranty feature on all US-manufactured purchases and a
protection program of all retail purchases from damage or theft. The MTVU credit card even gives the cardholder
zero liability on unauthorized charges made on the card. As an added offer, MTVU credit card holders can use a
virtual account number when shopping online in order to avoid credit card number theft.
There is no annual fee for the MTVU credit card. Other fees and rates include a purchase APR of 0% for the first 7
months, which reverts back to a range of 12.99% to 20.24% thereafter. The cash advance APR is a variable 25.24%
while a default APR of 29.99% may be given once a cardholder misses out on a payment. Other fees include a minimum
finance charge of $0.50, a foreign transaction fee of 3% of the amount in US dollars, a balance transfer fee of 3%
of the amount or $5, and a cash advance fee of 3% of the amount or $5. Penalty fees may be earned for late payments
and going over the credit limit. For late payments on balances up to $100, the fee is $15. For those between $100
and $250, the fee is $29 and for those that start from $250, the fee is $39. Another $39 will be charged once the
MTVU credit card holder goes over the limit. In order to avoid interest, a grace period of 20 days is given.
To apply for the MTVU credit card, one does not need a minimum income or co-signer. It can definitely be
used to establish a credit history and improve it.
